Scarborough U3A
Origins
The Scarborough branch of the U3A was formed following a public meeting organised by David Hughes on Saturday 17th November 1984 and the inaugural meeting took place at the Public Library, Vernon Road, on the 24th November 1984. The aims of the organisation, as set out by Peter Laslett and Frank Pedley, were to enable retired people to continue in pursuits of an educational and cultural nature.

Present Day
The group now has nearly 400 members who participate as Course Leaders and/or members in the activities of 60 Courses organised by the Course Liaison Officer. Scarborough U3A has received two 'Awards for All' Community Grants with which computer equipment, audio visual aids, and specialist Course materials have been purchased to enable the Committee to better serve the interest of the membership.
Membership
Membership is open to anyone over the age of 50 years who is not in full-time employment, or who is registered as disabled. The annual membership subscription is currently £25 and is due in July of each year. How to apply

Enrolment on Courses
There are presently some 60 Courses full details of which are contained in the annual Course Prospectus. A copy of this prospectus is sent to all existing members in July with a deadline for re-enrolment on the Course(s) of their choice. Prospective new members receive a Membership Pack on application, and may join at any time up to 31st December. After that date new members can join for a 50% reduction in membership subscription. Some Courses are subject to a limited capacity. In the event of these being full, a Waiting List is established. The Membership Secretary is responsible for allocation of all places, which may only be achieved by submitting a completed Enrolment Form and Gift Aid Declaration, if applicable, along with the Membership Fee, and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Waiting Lists
Occasionally, some members are unable to join Courses of their choice because there is a Waiting List. The best solution to this is to offer more Courses of a similar nature, and members are encouraged to consider becoming a Course Leader in the subject in which they are interested. It is not always necessary to be an expert or highly skilled. Often, all that is needed is for someone to co-ordinate the meeting and to fill in the register.

Scarborough U3A Newsletter
When you are a member your Committee would like to receive articles for inclusion in the Newsletter. Please send your contribution (either hand-written or typed) to the Editor.

U3A News
Produced by the Third Age Trust headquarters in Bromley. This publication appears four times a year and articles and letters from all U3A members are welcomed. A copy is delivered to all fully paid up members free of charge.

Outings, Visits & Holidays
A varied range of outings and a holiday take place each year. Full details are to be found in the Events page of this website, in the Scarborough U3A Newsletter and at Monday morning meetings.

Book Sale
A book sale is organised, to boost U3A funds, at the Friends’ Meeting House on the first Monday of each month. Members are encouraged to donate books, recent magazines and audio books, and also to take the opportunity to make  purchases.

Committee
Committee members are elected to serve for a period of three years. If any U3A member would like to volunteer to join the Committee when a vacancy occurs, it would be helpful if they could inform the Secretary, so that a list of such members can be compiled, together with a note of what position you would be willing to undertake.

Signing In
Members attending the Monday morning coffee and speaker sessions are asked to sign in when they arrive. This is done in order to comply with fire regulations, and also to help us to identify new members, so that we are able to offer them a warm welcome. Members of the Committee would appreciate help from volunteers who could introduce new members to their circle of friends to ensure that they do not feel isolated. If anyone can help in this way please contact the Secretary
